Food Anger (Bonus Blog)

So I decided to take a quick 30 minute nap before I would head over to the pizza party my lab was having. My alarm went off and I promptly put on my clothes to get ready to leave. Before I left, I remember one of the guys at the lab wanted to play the gc so I packed up some games and my gc and put them in my bag.

When I put down my bag and went into the room with the pizza, I was not surprised. All the pizza was gone. Not only was this bad because I planned to eat this pizza for dinner, but the same crap that would happen to me in the US happened to me in Korea. You can't be late to a party with free food around college students (graduate students).

Although I should have expected this scenario and should have been in the room 5 mintues before the party started, I was really annoyed. Actually, I was borderline pissed. I mean all these people just snatch up the food. They know the food in the area I don't really eat. I have to walk 20 minutes to get to a place that has food. And after I took my time to bring the gc so they can play some video games during the party.

I looked around and everyone was so nonchalant. That made me even more furious. I was so mad at myself. I should have known. I should have known. I looked at the clock and I was 20 minutes late. All that was left was a slice of pizza with Korean toppings.

I was hungry so I took a bite. In my mind, I said, "What the....oh no, what kind of toppings is this...". I mean do you really need to put corn on pizza. The pizza had CORN TOPPING. Well least it didn't have kimchi topping or I would have flipped.

Anyway, I didn't say nothing to my lab mates because it wasn't their fault I was late and it wasn't their problem. They did nothing wrong. So I decided to go to the cafeteria. I went into the cafeteria and looked at the food. I tried to find something safe. There was rice, fish, and something else. I asked a student what this general tso look-a-like food was. He told me it was pork cutlet.

So I knew I had something edible to eat: pork, fish, and rice. However, I was thirsty so I went to get a pepsi. And get this, there were separate registers for the drinks and the food. I mean really, why separate registers? After a failed attempt of asking the lady at the register could I pay for my pepsi at the other register, she called over a cute Korean girl who spoke English. The girl explained this notion of two separate registers. (Note: Notion I mean she told me that I have to pay for my soda at this register and food at the other register. Also, the registers were not next to each other.)

So I bought my food and soda and sat down. Boy, did I feel like the odd man out. I was like the kid in those cartoon specials where the kid sits all by himself until someone comes over to talk to him. Anyway, I started to eat and it tasted good then...BAM! Weird taste, weird taste. I tried to eat as much of the food as possible but I really wasn't feeling it. Disgusted, I walked out of the cafeteria and went to my room to sleep.

Moral of the story: When there's free food, arrive 30 minutes early. Cafeteria food in general sucks, no matter where you are. I am thankful it isn't expensive like cafeteria food in the US.
